How to prepare your kids for your photography session

How to prepare your kids for your photography session.

I touched on this a little bit with the FAQ’s post the other day as well as in this post here but we are going to talk a little bit more about it today specifically for the kids. How to prepare your kids for your photography session and why is pretty important for a successful shoot not only for myself but for you as well. Kids want to know whats going on, I know I did as a child. I wanted to know everything for no other reason but to feel like I was included in the process. I loved knowing secrets that my siblings didn’t know or so I was told they didn’t know. I struggle with telling my own kids things in advance because I really dislike hearing “are we there yet?” “when are we leaving?” etc. However, my kids are do really well with quick change and sudden impulse plans but I know not all kids are like that.

Consider these tips to help prepare your kids

  1. Tell them in advance, how ever far in advance you feel you need so they have time to get used to the idea. Explain to them you are all going to have fun as a family and that a photographer named Candace will be there taking pictures of it. You can let them practice with your own camera or phone letting them take pictures. Little ones that need an idea of what to expect really enjoy this.
  2. Don’t let them think I am the bad guy. I want them to be comfortable with me and have fun and if they are told they will be in trouble if they aren’t good for me they will be scared and I don’t want that.
  3. Don’t tell them “that is not your real smile” I know a fake smile from a real smile and have a few tricks to get them to show it to me!
  4. Bring something you as a family enjoy doing and we can incorporate into the session (please discuss this with me before hand so we are all prepared) such as a game, bubbles, etc.
  5. Ensure bellies are satisfied and tired eyes have had rest. I don’t know about you but I get hangry when I am hungry, and doing things while hangry do not work out too well. I also get grumpy when I’m tired and I do not expect anything less from kids either.

If your child needs something more to prepare, contact me and we can talk about it more in depth and tailor it to your child’s needs. The last thing I want is a stressed mom and/or dad, so let me do what you hired me to do. 🙂

Have you come up with some tips on your own that help you prepare? Id love to hear them and share them as well!
